This collection contains lists of prisoners tried at Middlesex or Westminster Sessions of the Peace in England, between the years 1836 and 1889. Records typically include the name of the individual, age, and the date when the trial took place. Records may also include information about the occupation, previous convictions, offense charged with, verdict, and sentence. "Sessions of the peace" were courts held in England during the medieval and early modern periods that dealt with minor criminal offenses and civil disputes. They were presided over by justices of the peace, who were appointed by the monarch to maintain law and order in their local area. The sessions of the peace were usually held four times a year and were attended by the local gentry and other prominent citizens, who acted as jurors and provided local knowledge to the justices. The courts had jurisdiction over a range of offenses, including theft, assault, and public disorder, and could impose fines, imprisonment, or corporal punishment.
