Victoria Police Gazette 1895. 1895. Police Gazettes are an untapped source of information for the genealogist. They contain a wealth of information for anyone with interests in someone who was in the Victorian Police Force as well a people police dealt with.<br><br> You may find your ancestor among those on the wrong side of the law ? or perhaps as a victim of a robbery or assault, or even just a missing person or a witness to an event. Details can all be found in the Police Gazettes.</p> <p>Compiled to be distributed amongst the Police Force only, the Police Gazettes contain fascinating details and information that can not be found anywhere else. Each issue is usually eight (or so) pages, and contains information on changes within the police force such as promotions, demotions, resignations, dismissals, deaths etc. Also details on rewards, housebreak-ins, robberies, arson, murders, inquests, lost horses and cattle, deserters, escaped prisoners, missing friends, lost, found and stolen items, reports on those apprehended and discharged, and so much more. Notices from interstate police gazettes are often included.</p> <blockquote> <p><u>Example entries taken from the 22 May 1895 issue:</u><br> Deserters of Wives and Children<br> George Damyon is charged, on warrant, with deserting his wife, Ellen Damyon, 72 Argyle-street, St. Kilda, at Collingwood, on the 3rd instant. Description:- English, labourer, 28 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, medium build, thin features, dark complexion, heavy dark eyebrows, blue yes, rather large nose, fair moustache only, anchor tattooed on one arm, marked on back of hands, ring tattooed on one finger, very large hands; wore a dark sac coat and vest, light-coloured trousers, a brown boxer hat with black band, and lace-up boots. Has his child, 8 months old, with him. - O.4021. 18th May, 1895.</p> </blockquote> <p>This valuable resource is now on fully-searchable CD-ROM for the first time. </p>
